The reality of life for many individuals in Colombia is that having a pair of shoes is a novelty. It is not uncommon for children to grow up in these areas without ever having had a brand new pair of shoes.
In the rural areas of Colombia, if people are not barefoot, then their shoes are usually very worn. The rural Colombian people live in the mountains. The terrain they walk across every day is rocky, wearing out shoes quickly.
Children in the rural areas walk miles to school. A journey to school can become dangerous for children lacking proper footwear.
